Real Studio Tour – Thread Storage

thread1

This week I am joining in the Real Studio Tour that Vicki Welsh is hosting on her Field Trips in Fiber blog.  This weeks topic is Storage Solutions and I have a thread storage solution to share with you.  I use a drawer set from IKEA called ALEX for storing all my cones of threads, pantographs and notions.  To keep the threads from rolling around my husband added a few wooden dividers with notches to hold the cones.

I think it is important to keep your threads out of direct sunlight and in drawers to keep the dust off them so these drawers work great!   I have three of these drawer sets and have room for one more.  They fit nicely under my longarm and are on castors so they are easy to move and clean around.

The drawers even hold my bags that I sent my clients quilts home in.

So there is my thread storage solution and I hope you have time to check out the other storage solutions at the Real Studio Tour.

  2. Ikea is my go-to place for storage also! I have a tall Alex , dressers under my cutting table, a office chair at my sewing machine and ..oh, I cannot remember it all! You would have been proud of me..yesterday I was in Ikea and left with NO FURNITURE! Not even something from the 'as is' area. It was a note worthy day!

  3. Beautiful . . . the closest Ikea store is over 8 hours away, meaning it is not a viable option for me. Lucky those of you with one closer to home.

  11. It is funny that it seems many of us on this tour know a woodworker! Your spool dividers, someone else's rolling storage bin holder, and the list goes on! Next week at the studio tour I will have several items my dad made.

  14. If I could shoehorn one more thing into my little studio it would be one (or more of these). They would be perfect for storing threads of all sorts! Beads, too!

  16. Your storage system looks fantastic! I am not sure if my big Aurifil Cones will fit into the drawer, but will try it out the next time when I am at Ikea.

    1. They should do. I just tried Omni and it fit fine. They are about the same size as Aurifil

  19. Love it! I have that same drawer system. Love the way you hold the cones in place. I need to get my husband to do that for me. How did you secure the wood strips in the drawer?

  20. I have two Alex Containers that fit under my longarm machine. I store threads, panthographs and rulers there. I love your idea of seperating the spools with wooden dividers.

  23. Thanks so much for sharing this. I went to my local Ikea (3 hrs away) and purchased three. Nay hubbies is now planning the dividers. It's soooo much nicer than what I'm currently using. And now I'll be able to get all my threads in one place. Thanks again! So much of my sewing room is Ikea.
