Cleopatra’s Fan Quilt

cindy1

This is Cindy’s Cleopatra’s Fan quilt and when I was searching online for quilting ideas  I found it as a kit on the Craftsy website here.   It was the only quilt I found for inspiration and Cindy said she felt it was quilted to heavy to her taste so I kept my quilting designs on the lighter side.    I had never seen this pattern before so was very excited to quilt this one as the blocks have a very unique shape to them.

This metallic fabric collection is by Robert Kaufman and called Beau Monde.  I quilted all the blocks the same with Magnifico #2063 gold thread that matched the gold in the fabrics.  Since the block have two fabrics and the light and dark alternate you can either see the leaf swirl design or the feather designs.

I then quilted simple swirls in the background with white So Fine thread.  I used Quilters Dream Blend batting and a light beige So Fine thread on the back.

Now I’ll have to pack up this beauty and sent it back to Cindy in California!

  1. I, too, have never seen this block before. It is intriguing with its shape and colouration. I really like how the quilting shows differently on the differently coloured blocks. This is a real showpiece. Congratulations, Cindy and Kathy. Kathy, I think you have your quilting mojo back.

  6. You have nailed the quilting motif on this one perfect! The blocks look like they are flowing with movement. I can imagine a block as a tiara made from jewels. The pattern is free on the Robert Kaufman website. Outstanding job, Kathy

  8. Oh yay! I have the templates for this quilt pattern! I think I may do mine in some civil war fabric...I have tons of it in my stash. As usual your quilting is perfect for the quilt pattern. I may have to borrow some of you quilting techniques for mine. :)

  11. I also saw this kit in the Keepsake Quilting catalogue a while ago. The quilting is look good, Kathy, but wow, the photos are amazing! The colours in the quilt look perfect with the late summer colours around your house. I think we will all have to send you our quilts just so you can photograph them in your gorgeous "studio"! Beautiful work all around. :D

  13. Am so in love with this, but am wondering.....No where on the pattern does it state the size of the blocks. I'm really big on squaring up before final assembly, could you clue me in as to the size before I begin>

  14. This pattern dates back to 1934 and was designed by Linda Wheeler ( I think). Robert Kaufman fabrics has a free downloadable pattern and templates
