Lucky Stars

ps

This is Patty’s Lucky Star Quilt and the pattern is by Atkinson Designs.  She purchased it as a kit from Fat Quarter shop and it uses Moda’s Grace fabric which is a collection by 3 Sisters.  Patty is my client that lives in Germany and I have quilted for her a few times now.  She started piecing this quilt when she was deployed to Djibouti for seven months and finished it at several quilt retreats with her quilt guild in Germany; Rheinland Pfalz Quilt Guild.  She lived in a tent and set up a sewing station on foot lockers so was very busy in the evenings sewing many quilt tops.  Here are some pictures of her tent!

She asked for custom quilting and wanted the stars to pop so I stitched in the ditch around the stars and the cross hatched the centers to give it a traditional feel.  I then added a border of loops around the background in the blocks to frame the stars.  Next I quilted open feathers in the sashing to add great texture.

I used a beige So Fine thread on top and a beige Bottom line thread on the back.  The batting is Quilters Dream Blend.

The temperatures have been above freezing during the day so the snow is melting quickly.   We decided to cut down a tree that has been infested with bugs before it decided to fall on its own towards the house!   This is a good time of year to drop it on the lake as the ice is still thick.  We will cut it up for firewood and clean up the mess on the ice this weekend.

  1. What a lovely quilt, the fabric looks like French General but is in fact by Moda's Grace. I love your quilting on this one, really makes the stars pop just like the customer ordered!! Is that a frozen duck in the water next to the quilt?

    1. Yes that duck has had a long winter under the snow and ice!

  2. Patty's quilt is beautiful! I bought the kit and extra fabrics to make a king size version several years ago, made 64 blocks and only got about 15 trimmed before I got distracted by other projects. Seeing Patty's makes me want to get my butt in gear and get it finished, thanks ladies!

  4. Beautiful quilt and the quilting is wonderful! I don't know that I would be that motivated to sew in a tent, so kudos to her for that! Nice job to you both! How did you get that duck to sit there, right next to the quilt? Oh, maybe it's a "fake" duck?! Frozen duck?! ha!

    1. It's a sign of spring when the ducks come back! LOL! A few neighbours and us like to use decoy ducks to mark our water lines where our pumps are. This one just started showing up as the ice and snow is melting.

  5. Patty, this is truly beautiful, and proves that we can quilt anywhere!! Love your enthusiasm and talent. Kathy, another one of your beautiful quiltings, and the duck, a little sign of more to come.

  6. That is a stunning quilt!! and equally beautiful quilting, Kathy. I've made this quilt 3 or 4 times, but I'd take this one over all the ones that I've made!!

  7. I'm glad that is a decoy. Phew! I was afraid it was a real duck stuck in the ice. Kathy, I really can't thank you enough for the beautiful quilting. I loved the fabric so much and the quilt when it was done. I knew it was one I was keeping for myself...so many of my quilts are gifts. Your quilting makes me fall in love with it all over again. I love the feathers, of course! but the cross-hatching in the star centers is on point!!! Thank you so much! You are so talented - in quilting and photography!
