Canadian Floral Emblem Quilt

This is Bonnie’s Canadian Floral Emblem Quilt. She found the muslin printed with the 10 provinces floral emblems in her mothers belongings after she passed in 2000.  Bonnie photocopied the muslin then used a transfer pen to copy the designs onto fabric.  She hand embroidered all the blocks and then decided how to turn the blocks into a quilt. With the help of graph paper, many yards of fabric and the help of the internet Bonnie came up with the quilts layout.  She framed all the blocks with a navy 1/4” flange.  Some of the blocks are set on point and while the four in the outer corners are framed in a brown fabric like the focal center block is.  I thought this gives the quilt a nice balance! 

Bonnie asked if I could quilt butterflies on the quilt somewhere and I added them into the white sashing bars.  I cross hatched the embroidered blocks using 100wt MicroQuilter white thread so there is no thread seen on the embroidery and the blocks lay flat.

The borders consists of swirls, l’s and e’s, and a leaf with a curl design.  In the setting blocks I used a curved ruler as well as free handed the extra loops.

I used 4 different colours of thread.  Navy, brown and blue So Fine and white MicroQuilters on the embroidery blocks. Batting is Quilters Dream Blend.

Bonnie has created a wonderful heirloom quilt that I’m sure will be a enjoyed by her family for many generations to come.

This was my last client quilt for the summer as I am taking August off,  I can’t believe summer is half over already.   I intend to spend  this month enjoying the outdoors and visiting with friends and family!  I have all winter to sew but I’m sure I’ll be in my sewing room on those rainy days! :)

Feathers Quilt

This is my clients's Feathers quilt, the pattern is by Allison Glass.   In keeping with the modern feel we decided on straight line quilting, about every 1/2”, down the length of the feathers.  She used lovely modern fabrics with a navy background.  I used a navy So Fine thread on top and a dark green Bottom Line on the back as the backing was green.  The batting is Quilters Dream Blend.

She made her quilt 96” x104” so drapes nicely on a queen size bed.

A Full Moon Quilt

This is Bev’s A Full Moon Needlework BOM quilt, designed by Buttermilk Basin.  Bev did all the embroidery by hand to create this sweet Halloween wall hanging.  She said to ‘quilt it Halloweeny’ so that’s what I did! 

I first stitched in the ditch on all the blocks, then cross hatched the embroidery blocks with a beige MicroQuilter 100 wt thread. Then I had some fun and quilted spider webs in the four corners around the center block and added a spider dangling down from each.   Next was pumpkins and leaves in the orange sashing strips and loops and stars in the green starry fabric.  And in the outer border I quilted bats!

It seems to be haying time in our area so what better place to take pictures than in the field by my house full of hay bales.  Took me a bit to figure out how to hang it on the bale, glad I filled my pockets with supplies. Binder clips did the trick!

Had to walk through thistles as tall as me to get to this spot that I use often in the winter, I think it was worth it!

The Canadian Sampler

This is Eileen’s Canadian Sampler Quilt, it was a BOM project by Sew Sisters in 2017 to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday.  Each block was designed by a Canadian designer and Lori and I were pleased to be asked to participate in this project.  We designed block #8 which was the Snowflake block you see above.  We chose a snowflake for our block as it is a reflection of our love for winter in Canada.

I quilted it with the Bora Bora pantograph, giving it the feel of wind or clouds across the blocks.  I used white So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.  The fabrics are Northcott Colourworks Premium Solids ( Cardinal and Snow).

There are a lot of unique and fun blocks in this quilt!

Canadian Sesquicentennial Celebration Quilt

This is Jenny’s Canadian Sesquicentennial Celebration quilt, say that ten times fast! :)  Northcott Fabrics released this great collection to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary last year.  Jenny asked for straight line quilting and it really suited the quilt highlighting the Hudson Bay Blanket lines that she pieced into the quilt.

I used beige So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

I have been having fun taking pictures of lightening this summer as I love a good thunderstorm. This storm was just to the south of use last night, I had stars overhead so it was neat to watch the tops of the clouds light up.

Then last week we were right in the storm and I was trying to catch a bolt of lightening. Hope to get one that touches the ground, maybe next time!
