Island Sunrise

Our guild hosted a Judy Neimeyer paper piecing class this weekend and the project was the Island Sunrise quilt.  This is the first time I have made one of Judy's quilts and Michele our teacher was excellent, I learnt a lot of new paper piecing tips and techniques!!
I just updated the guild blog with pictures from our workshop, you can see those here.

I still have to add the borders but I was able to get the center blocks finished and sewn together in class.

The quilt shop that hosted the workshop also brought 700 bolts of batiks with them!!  That was a lot of bolts to haul but we made it worth their while!
I had a Bali Pop in my stash that I wanted to find a project for and found one.  I bought the Cappuccino pattern and the navy and green floral batiks to go with it.
The green mushroom print batik will be the inner border for my Island Sunrise and the white and blue batiks were impulse buys!

  1. Beautiful quilt, Kathy! I took a JN workshop this summer as well, and love the way her patterns come together. I'm only about 1/3 the way through my Prairie Star, but it's going to be worth the time! Again, very nice job and wonderful fabric choices!

  3. I have never been able to get the knack of paper piecing. I would love to take a JN class and actually get the hang of it while creating a beauty like yours.

  4. Fabulous quilt top...I love batiks of any description!

Kathy, can I ask a question about your Millie in your Shack in winter. What kind of temperature level do you keep in your shack?
My Millie is in my home above my kitchen where my Aga has been running all summer as the weather here has been cold and wet. As often happens my Millie starts to skip stitches when the temperatures drop, even if she has been running all afternoon... below 18 degrees I have to stop and wait for my studio to warm up so I try to keep the temperature above 20 degrees celsius....that is a little too warm for me to be honest as the room has low ceilings.
I know that you must suffer weather that is far colder than ours and for longer periods so wondered how this affects your machine?

  6. Your color choice is just smashing, Kathy. I also love to work with batiks, but they are so hard to get here in Italy. Reading that the quilt shop brought 700 bolts in just makes me weep. Thumps up!
