Winter’s Lane

rae1

Looks like we are bringing the cold weather into the New Year!  I can’t escape it, I tried but it didn’t work.   We spent a week down in Winnipeg visiting family over the holiday and it was so cold it got down to –50’ with wind-chill one night!  The joke one day was we were colder than Mars as one day we only reached a high of –30’c and it got to –29’c on Mars that day.   So I’m now home, the boys are back to school today and I’m getting back into my quilting routine.

This is Rae’s Perfect Ten quilt and she used a Moda fabric collection called Winter’s Lane.  She added the solid red for the frames and a small brown inner border.  The panto is called Chantilly Lace and it has Dream Blend Batting.

The backing is an off white ‘Minkie’ type fabric from Joann’s called Ultra Cuddle and I had suggested Rae try this as I had bought some for our guild since it was on sale.  I have to say this is the first time I’ve had trouble quilting this type of fabric.  It was very stretchy and uneven and I would not recommend it to anyone now!!  So know I understand why others have trouble and I will now make sure I try a new fabric before recommending it to my friends.  It looks and feels really nice it’s just a pain to quilt!

Since it has been really cold this winter I thought I would treat myself to a goose down coat this Christmas and I am loving it.  Now I’ll be able to stay outside longer than a few minutes when I’m taking quilting pictures.  I was only outside a minute and you can see my hair was starting to frost over from my breath.

Okay this is more of how I usually look out in the cold!

* warning – exposure to cold temperature from prolonged periods of time can make you feeling a bit goofy*

  1. Love that line! I wish they had had some of the white fabric with the birds and not just blue at my local shop. Like that panto too! The coat looks warm as well:)

  5. Kathy: Awesome quilting... even with a backing that make you go "argh" as you quilted. Congrats on your new parka.
But where is your face protector? After all -50C is -50C! :)

  8. Kaunis ja talvinen peitto. Tykkään peitosta juuri noiden punaisten ruutujen takia, ihana!

  11. Is that one of those Canada Goose coats? I've heard they're pretty nice, and would be perfect for where you live!

I've been meaning to ask, Kathy, how do you use your camera when it's so cold outside? Do you have gloves you can use, or do you just take them off? I find it hard to manage, even when it's warmer than now!

  15. Love the new coat (better be a Canada Goose one!) ...... keep warm! We are experiencing a "January thaw" here in Ontario and really, after windchills of -40ºC earlier this week today's 1ºC with rain feels quite tropical. It's the risk of flooding which has me a tad nervous though. Happy 2014 to you and your family.

  16. A lovely quilt, and the jacket looks toasty. The joke on our weather to week was that Adelaide (South Australia) was the hottest city on earth yesterday 46*C. Not a title I want to achieve ever again!
