Northern Lights on New Years Eve

We were treated to a beautiful display of Northern Lights tonight.  My husband and I got bundled up and took our cameras out onto the lake to get some pictures.  It was a mild evening with the temperatures being -7'c so that was great!  I didn't freeze my hands taking pictures.

This one is looking across our bay at our neighbors house and you can see the clouds starting to roll in.  And the next one is also of another neighbors house that turned out great.

We walked further out into the lake behind an island to block the light from the houses and got this next shot as well as the first picture in this post.

My husband took a picture of me taking pictures of the lights!

This was one of the best aurora events I have seen this year so was a great way to end the year!

  1. You are so lucky. I have only seen them once, about fifty years ago and I dream about seeing them again. I hope It is a sign of many good things to come in the New Year!

  6. Beautiful! I used to see them regularly when I lived in northern Alberta and northern BC. I moved south for some warmth and now I miss my northern lights. Thanks for the glorious pictures.

  8. Your pictures are beautiful! I've only seen the northern lights once and it was in the Canadian Rockies while on a trip with my mom. But that one time is something I will never forget. Your blog is simply the best! You live in such a beautiful location and it's so great that you include that beauty along with the quilts and your gorgeous quilting that you do. Happy New Year!

  13. Thanks for going out in the cold with your camera. We saw them, too, in central Wisconsin as we were driving to a friend's home for their annual New Year's Eve get together. Ours were vertical green columns with a horizontal band running beneath. Not spectacular, but better than any other New Year's pyrotechnics than I can imagine.

  14. How very fortunate for you! I saw them frequently when I was a child in Central Illinois and the skies were less polluted. (It's interesting that when we didn't say aurora borealis we called them "heat lightning."--There was a lot less understanding of solar flares 50 or 60 years ago.) Here in the southwest, there's no chance of them being visible--however, we did have amazing pink and almost white skies last night. Thank you for sharing your photos with us.

  16. I heard through the grapevine that we would get to see the northern lights from here in northern Washington. (right on the Staits of Juan de Fuca) so I kept my eyes open and checked every so often I had my camera ready to go, but all I got was cold! Then I found out that they were seen in Scotland. I was disappointed, but I know they are seen from here from time to time, so I won't give up! Thank you for sharing your experience!!!
