Smoke and Fire Quilt

Vicki made this striking Smoke and Fire quilt which was a pattern in Fons and Porter's Quilting Quickly magazine July/Aug 2015 edition.  She used a great mix of black and white prints with the perfect pop of red.

I quilted it with the Gingersnap pantograph, light grey So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

  2. Very striking. I hope she does the binding in red, but that is just my opinion.

  4. Trying to figure out how the red squares were applied. Beautiful quilt.

    1. I believe each block is made up of three rectangles (similar to the split rail block), then a small red square is placed in ONE corner of the "split rail block" and stitched diagonally which, when pressed to the side makes it triangle. Like you do to make a snowball block only you do it on just one corner.

    2. I think your right any split rail with a snow ball at one corner would work. Great idea!

  6. I made this one for a Christmas gift for my daughter 2019 with pillow cases to match. She loves it. Fons and Porter have an easy video on it on utube

  7. At a closer look, it appears a red “snowball” triangle is needed on opposing corners, I.e. upper, left and lower, right. The blocks can then be set in either vertically or horizontally. When the triangles corners meet, it forms the on point squares. Simple piecing with an impressive outcome. Beautiful quilt with so many possibilities.
