This week I am joining in the Real Studio Tour that Vicki Welsh is hosting on her Field Trips in Fiber blog. This weeks topic is Storage Solutions and I have a thread storage solution to share with you. I use a drawer set from IKEA called ALEX for storing all my cones of threads, pantographs and notions. To keep the threads from rolling around my husband added a few wooden dividers with notches to hold the cones.
I think it is important to keep your threads out of direct sunlight and in drawers to keep the dust off them so these drawers work great! I have three of these drawer sets and have room for one more. They fit nicely under my longarm and are on castors so they are easy to move and clean around.
The drawers even hold my bags that I sent my clients quilts home in.
So there is my thread storage solution and I hope you have time to check out the other storage solutions at the Real Studio Tour.
Where do you buy your quilt bags ? I love this idea. thanks, Claire
ReplyDeleteIkea is my go-to place for storage also! I have a tall Alex , dressers under my cutting table, a office chair at my sewing machine and ..oh, I cannot remember it all! You would have been proud of me..yesterday I was in Ikea and left with NO FURNITURE! Not even something from the 'as is' area. It was a note worthy day!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful . . . the closest Ikea store is over 8 hours away, meaning it is not a viable option for me. Lucky those of you with one closer to home.

DeleteTämä on hyvä idea, olen pitkään jo harkinnut hankkivani näitä laatikostoja Ikeasta!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's luxury storage there! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThose drawers are perfect for thread - what a great idea with the notched boards too! I'm pinning this - thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletei use an alex for my thread storage also...i have a narrow tall one...best drawers ever
ReplyDeleteThose drawers are great!!! I've never seen them before! Excellent idea. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove those drawers. I think I need them soon. How many cones fit in each drawer?
ReplyDelete27 cones a drawer.
DeleteWhat a fabulous idea! I feel so much space under my longarm is being waisted. These drawers are perfect. Thank you so much for sharing! x
ReplyDeleteIt is funny that it seems many of us on this tour know a woodworker! Your spool dividers, someone else's rolling storage bin holder, and the list goes on! Next week at the studio tour I will have several items my dad made.
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhhhhhh I would kill for those thread dressers!!!!! And the bags...love them.
ReplyDeleteThese are ideal! Now if I can figure what to throw out! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteIf I could shoehorn one more thing into my little studio it would be one (or more of these). They would be perfect for storing threads of all sorts! Beads, too!
ReplyDeleteBecause of your posting about getting another Alex cabinet a while back, I got one too and absolutely LOVE it. I need to get my dad to notch some boards for me too!!
ReplyDeleteYour storage system looks fantastic! I am not sure if my big Aurifil Cones will fit into the drawer, but will try it out the next time when I am at Ikea.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Have a great week end!
Saskia
They should do. I just tried Omni and it fit fine. They are about the same size as Aurifil
DeleteWhat a great idea! I love the addition of the dividers to stabilize the thread cones. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a marvellous idea!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea. Looked at Ikea online, and they don't show these--hope they get them (or something similar) back. They're just what I've been looking for.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I have that same drawer system. Love the way you hold the cones in place. I need to get my husband to do that for me. How did you secure the wood strips in the drawer?
ReplyDeleteI have two Alex Containers that fit under my longarm machine. I store threads, panthographs and rulers there. I love your idea of seperating the spools with wooden dividers.
ReplyDeleteOh My Goodness! Love your fitted drawers! Want!
ReplyDeleteWowzers! That is some serious eye candy right there!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing this. I went to my local Ikea (3 hrs away) and purchased three. Nay hubbies is now planning the dividers. It's soooo much nicer than what I'm currently using. And now I'll be able to get all my threads in one place. Thanks again! So much of my sewing room is Ikea.
ReplyDeleteI will build a storage racks for my betta fish. I think I will use a recycled woodne pallet
