Alternate Routes #8

This is Diane’s Alternate Routes quilt that she made this year at our Sew Along with Up North Quilt Shop.  She used two shades of purple and made the lap size version in our Highway 10 Designs pattern.

I picked Tickle for the pantograph design, used purple So Fine thread and used Quilters Dream Blend batting.   We haven’t seen much of the sun in the past few weeks and there is finally have a few inches of snow on the ground.   The sun did peek out for a minute when  I was taking pictures so you can see the quilting in the next photo.

Garden Delights

I discovered this lovely fabric collection called Garden Delights by Grey Sky Studios at Fabriculous in Gimli, MB this summer and I couldn’t leave them behind!   I’m not usually drawn to floral fabrics but this collection had a wonderfully vintage feel to them that made me feel  happy!    I spent the next month or two looking through all my pattern books to find the right pattern to use.  I found the one in the book ‘By the Bundle’ by Emma Jean Jansen and the pattern is called Diamonds and Squares.

I pieced the squares at my Tuesday sewing group this fall.  Last week I quilted it with Wave on Wave pantograph and finished hand stitching the binding last night.

I used white So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

I have one more quilt to finish for a client then I am done for the year!  I really enjoy taking December off and have a few more of my personal quilts I want to get done before the end of the year.

Nicole’s T-Shirt Quilt

My friend Debby, who I have known since 1997 when she lived in Flin Flon, asked if I would be interested in quilting her daughter Nicole’s T-Shirt quilt.   Absolutely!  I was so excited to hear she was interested in quilting along with all her other crafting interests like knitting, crocheting and wool felting!   She watched YouTube videos and read other online sources to learn how to quilt.  Debby bought her the rotary cutter, rulers and mat so she had the right tools.  She did a fantastic job on the quilt top and stabilized all the t-shirts well!  She used mostly T-shirts from her high school activities including Orchestra where she plays the Cello, and Track and Field where she excels in Pole Vaulting.  This will be a great memory quilt for her of her high school years.

Nicole picked Flirtatious for the pantograph, I used grey So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Puff batting so it will be cuddly and warm.

Nicole will be graduating this coming spring and then off to University to study Kinesiology in the fall.  Here  are a few pictures of her from her grad photo shoot and one of her in action pole vaulting!   She is a very talented young lady and I wish her all the best in her future!

New Highway 10 Designs Pattern - Roundabout

Lori and I are excited to share our latest Highway 10 Designs pattern – Roundabout.  The pattern includes instructions to make 6 placemats and two table runners that work well on a round or oval table.  The placemats and Elongated Runner can easily be customized in length to fit your table size using our simple formula! It is very simple, trust us! :)

I made my Roundabout samples with pretty blue and grey batik fabrics and custom quilted  with grey thread.  This is a fast and fun project that you can quilt up easily yourself.

You will need a 60 degree ruler, minimum 7”, for this pattern.

As you can see this Hexi runner was inspired by our Lug Nuts pattern.

It was quite a challenge to find a round table to take photos for the cover shot as I do not own a round table.  Then I remembered that there was a round picnic table on one of the community decks in Emo along the waterfront.  And to my pleasant surprise there was an umbrella in the table that matched the placemats I made!  I couldn’t have planned it better!  And yes these pictures were taken back in September.

Lori made this purple set for her daughter to go on her table for her new apartment.   The pattern also includes bonus instructions for a single Hexi table center.   You can check out Lori’s blog post as she gets into more detail about how many placemats work on different sizes of tables.

Lori and I were able to test the pattern at Keystone Quilts retreat in Winnipeg in September.  A few ladies took our afternoon class and here are the results.  Love seeing all the different fabrics quilters choose for their projects.

There were a few more but they were camera shy!

Scrappy Squares and HSTs

Sarah-Lynn’s mom started this lovely scrappy quilt and Sarah-Lynn added a few more rows to help her mom finish the top.   I asked her what the pattern was called and she didn’t know, her mom just referred to it as her Flying Geese quilt so that might be the name of the pattern even thought the blocks are not flying geese.  I love the scrappy background as it creates a watercolour effect on the whole quilt. She asked for Ebb and Flow for the pantograph and Quilters Dream Blend Batting.

I used beige So Fine thread on top and gold Bottom Line on the back.  I usually like to use the same thread top and bottom but beige would not have looked good on the back. Since the backing had a metallic print I thought gold would suit it best and it is similar enough in colour to the top.   I’m very happy with that choice as the gold thread looks like an extra strand of gold beads mixed into the ones in the print.

Spool Quilt

This is Gail’s Spool Quilt and the pattern is by Missouri Star Quilt Company.  You can find the link to the tutorial for the pattern here.  It is a charm pack friendly pattern and Gail used lovely soft floral collection for the center of the spools.  I chose Rhapsody for the pantograph design as it matched well with the floral fabrics.  The batting is Quilters Dream Blend and the thread beige So Fine.

Still not much snow here, thought we did get a bit today it won’t last long as we are forecast to warm up by Friday with rain! 

Four in a Row Quilt

This is Gail’s Four in a Row quilt and the pattern is from Quickly Quilting magazine, Spring 2014.  She used a stunning grey,black, white fabric collection called Nature’s Pearl by Kansas Studios.  Since the fabrics had a few images of dandelions I chose Bora Bora for the pantograph as it reminds me of wind!  The thread is grey So Fine and the batting Quilters Dream Blend.




I was also able to finished a lovely neutral modern table runner for Nancy this weekend.  The pattern she used is called Stepping Stones by Midcoast Cottage Designs. I quilted it with the Chinook Pantograph, used dark grey So Fine Thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.   We had a light snowfall this weekend, just enough to cover the deck and was able to take advantage of about 10 minutes of sunshine this morning to get a few photos.
