Landmark Quilt

Shelly made this modern Landmark quilt using a pattern by The Blanket Statement.  She used 3 shades of solid greens, a grey linen background and a black and white gingham sashing.

I quilted it with the Time Warp pantograph as Shelly likes denser quilting and it creates fabulous texture!  I used a grey So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Just love the texture this quilting design gives a quilt!

Shelly's North Stars Quilt

Check out Shelly's fabulous North Stars Quilt, the pattern is by Elizabeth Hartman.  Shelly and her SIL Barb challenged each other in 2020 to work on a block a month and only use their scraps.

We chose the Bora Bora pantograph for this one. I suggested a snowflake panto first but Shelly though a 'windy' design would be better.  I then went to check what I used on my North Stars quilts that I made this summer and sure enough I used Bora Bora on mine.  She was very pleased to hear that it was my original choice too! LOL!

I used light grey So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

So last night the Northern Lights were even more active than a few days ago so I was out with my camera until midnight enjoying the show.  First one taken from my driveway when the lights got very active.

Second one I walked down the street to get the street lights behind me and took a selfie using my tripod ( you can see its shadow).

This is my favorite one from last night taken in my back yard.

African Quilt

Marlene sent me this fabulous quilt that she hand pieced!  She didn't use a pattern but based the design on Penrose Tile work.  Here is Marlene's quilt story in her own words.  "For 10 years, my husband and I travelled to Africa to do humanitarian work with Mercy Ships. Each year I made a point of going to the market to buy more souvenir fabric. So this quilt came together slowly and there are so many memories attached. If it weren’t for Covid, we would probably be back for our annual trip right now."

The fabrics are all waxed African prints.  The colours are so rich and the print designs so unique.

I quilted it with a pantograph that recently purchased called Ombre, the design reminds me of zebra strips.  Used black So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

The backing Marlene sent was also a waxed fabric and I just love this bold oversized floral print.

One of my favorite parts of quilting for others is having quilts like this one arrive in my studio.  Quilts that hold memories and have been years in the making.  I feel privileged to help finish in its journey to becoming a quilt.

Last night the Northern Lights made an appearance in our neighbourhood for the first time in 2 years. I think the solar minimum is finally at an end and we will be seeing an increase in the aurora in the coming years.  I took these photos from my driveway!

Then I drove down the road to get away from the streetlights. The aurora was dancing as I drove but as soon as I got to the old train station they disappeared pretty quickly.

This next picture was looking straight west so was surprised to see this lighter band so far south.

Star White, Star Bright Quilt

Lucinda made this great paper pieced quilt called Star White, Star Bright.  Pattern is by Bryan House Quilts, it was published in the August 2016 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting, you can find info about it here.

I quilted it with the Whitecaps pantograph, used white So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

We are still stuck in this deep freeze, this morning it was -39'c (-41'c with windchill).  Yesterday I was getting cabin fever so Tim and I bundled up and went outside for half hour to toss some hot water.  Its one of those fun cold weather things I like to photograph. Tim is much better at tossing the water than I am, he gets a good fan shape to his toss!

Cold Snap!

Its been pretty cold here this week with daytime highs of -25'c and night lows of -35'c.  So I haven't been venturing outside to take quilt pictures or any pictures!
This is Darcy's quilt and she made it for her son.  It looks like she used the Disappearing Nine Patch pattern and sashed the blocks!  Love the brown and teal fabrics she chose.  She asked for a simple stipple so I did my best to free hand that design and keep the scale consistent across this large bed sized quilt.

I used medium brown So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

I also finished Bev's Amelia's Meadow quilt which is a pattern by Fig Tree Quilts. She used pretty coral and brown batiks and a wonderful matching fireside backing!  I used the Whirlygig panto, coral So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Pecking Order Quilt

Theresa made this lovely Pecking Order quilt, pattern by Missouri Star Quilt Co.  She used a Moda line called Stiletto which I have a Jelly Roll of hiding in my stash.  Hummm now that I see how great it looks in my living room I think need to make a quilt with it next!  :)

I quilted it with the Come Dance with Me pantograph which fills in the light background so nicely.  I used off white So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Theresa brought a great black Northcott Canvas wide back which really shows off the quilting as I used a light silver Bottom Line thread on the back.

I definitely need to make something with my Stiletto fabrics!
