Keep on Turning Quilt

Vicki made this fun Keep on Turning quilt, a design by Jeni Baker of In Color Order. The pattern is in the Fall 2020 issue of Quilts & More magazine which you can find here.   Vicki used a variety of bright prints from her stash and a black background that really make the colours pop.

I used the Ginger Snap pantograph, black So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

The backing is a blue, purple and teal batik!

On Sunday we went to the Heron nesting ground, that is near our house, to see all the young that have hatched this spring.  There are about 8-10 nests with an average of 2-3 young in each.  We were able to watch a few moms return to their nests.  The young would bit at the moms beak and then she would feed them. The nests are about 50 high and 450 feet from where we were observing from the highway with a patch of dead trees between us making it tricky to photograph. I used my 600mm zoom lens.

You can see how close the nest are to each other, here is the second mom coming in.

You can see the young biting at her beak.  And in the nest above the young are biting each others beak.

I always enjoy watching them this time of year as soon the nests will be empty for another year. 

Hunters Star Baby Quilt

Theresa made this sweet baby quilt using the Hunters Star pattern and all batik fabrics.  I quilted it with the Happy Times pantograph.

I used a light grey So Fine thread and Quilters Dream 80/20 batting.

Backing is a lovely teal batik, I think I have some of this in my stash as its my favorite colour!

My garden is starting to show off its colours.

And I got an exciting package in the mail yesterday, a macro lens for my camera. Can't wait to play with that this summer.

Dogs in Christmas Sweaters!

 

Peggy made this sweet Dogs in Sweaters quilt, pattern by Elizabeth Hartman.  She used a line of Christmas fabrics from Moda called Jolly Seasons and the white on white snowflake print background is by Kimberbell Basics.

I quilted it with the Snow Winds pantograph, used white So Fine thread and white Dream 80/20 batting.

Here are some close ups so you can see this fun fabric.  Definitely not ugly Christmas sweaters!

And I had to add a few more hummingbird pictures as I'm getting better at catching the colours.  This guys love to sit a the top of my small maple tree and watch the feeders. He chases away any other hummingbirds that try to feed.

This guy made me laugh when he stretched his neck up, makes his belly stick out. I call this the 'dadbod' shot.  :)

Boo Quilt

Peggy made this fun Boo Quilt, the pattern is by The Pattern Basket.  She used a line of Moda fabrics called All Hallow's Eve for the ghosts.  

I used the Gossamer pantograph as it looks like spider webs, light beige So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Peggy used some of the All Hallow's Eve for the backing too.

Tile Time Quilt

This is Bev's Tile Time quilt, the pattern is by Amanda Wilbert and was published in the 168th issue of American Patchwork and Quilting. 

Bev use fall themed fabrics so we picked Poplar for the quilting design.  I used light beige So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Bev brought a lovely brown flannel for the backing.

I had to include this next shot, if you look above the quilt you'll see a confused hummingbird. I had taken my feeders down to add new water and it was baffled that they were gone. It actually had to go to all the flowers on my deck for a change. 

The Hummingbird Clearwing moths are back and I find them so fascinating.  I did some reading and found out that their similarity to Hummingbirds is an example of convergent evolution.  This means they are not related but independently evolved with similar traits and live in similar environments and eco niches.  They fly with a similar pattern,  can hover and move forward and backwards like a hummingbird and the sound their wings make is so similar. They also have a long proboscis for feeding on nectar like hummingbirds do yet they are an insect. So cool!
