Winter Woodlands Quilt

woodlands5

This is another one of Gail’s quilts and this one is called Winter Woodlands.  This is another Lisa Moore pattern and can be found here.  The curved edges are turned on the bias and then stitched down.  I custom quilted it with a water meander (I was interpreting this design as snow drifts in this case)  in the light blue and outer white print fabric,  swirls in the tree fabric and animal panels, and wavy lines with snowflakes in the outer border.

Hug Me Quilt and a Winner!

 hugme
This is one of our guild’s Hug Me quilts that we make and give to a guild member that is experiencing medical issues, it is our way of wrapping our members with our love and support when they need it most.  Fortunately we don’t have any members that need one right now but we are ready if we do and hope we don’t need to use it.

hugme2
The panto is called Hearts in Bloom and the quilt pattern is one we adapted from a magazine pattern.   The backing is a soft blue flannel to make it cozy!

Blue Batik by Karen

karen4
This is a Batik design created by a neighbor of mine Karen Clark and it is an Asian inspired design based on the Blue Willow china pattern.    Karen is a local artist that specializes in Oil Painting and Batik, and you can see her profile and other works of art on the NorVA website here.

karen1
We decided to keep the quilting simple as the Batik design is the main focus.    I used the pantograph design Curlz to give a soft texture to the piece without over powering it. I used a light blue thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

karen3karen7
Karen also dyed the sashing and backing fabric…I can’t take credit this time!

Batik Fabric Giveaway

*Giveaway is now closed*
Sew Sisters Quilt Shop_Giveaway
Recently I was contacted by Sew Sisters to see if I would be interested in hosting a sponsored giveaway and was told the prize would be batik fabrics.   I have never done a sponsored giveaway before and this one really fits well with my blog as you know how much I love batik fabrics.  I have also shopped from Sew Sisters online shop and received wonderful service.  It was a win win situation as my readers get the chance to win some beautiful fabric and Sew Sisters gets a spotlight on my blog.
If your new to my blog I’m a longarm quilter in Northern Manitoba that is passionate about quilting, loves to dye fabric and enjoys photographing my clients quilts in the beauty of our northern landscape.  Hope you’ll take a few minutes to browse the wonderful quilts that have come through the doors of Tamarack Shack!
The picture above is of the fabrics that are up for grabs, 4 half yard cuts of green batiks.   Sew Sisters has a Batik Lover’s Club where you can receive 4 half yards of batiks every month for $25.

‘Sew Sisters is a Canadian quilt shop dedicated to all things quilting. We have a large inventory of fabric, notions, books, kits and patterns. We conduct classes regularly for both beginners and advanced quilters and have many fun events through the year. We began as an online business 10 years ago. In our 5th year we opened our brick and mortar store here in Toronto. We believe a quilt shop is a quilter's "happy place" and we do everything we can to provide our customers with a special and happy experience both in the store and online.’
How to enter
You have up to two chances to win:
1.  Leave a comment and tell me if you have made a quilt with batik fabrics before.

Smokey River Quilt

marg4

This is Marg’s Smokey River quilt which is a Whirligig design. She bought this as a kit and one place I found it online was at Keepsake Quilting.  All the fabrics in the kit are Stonehenge fabrics which are so soft.  Great color combination of denim blue and browns/oranges too!  I love this picture below as you can see my neighbours cabin that is stained the same color as the border fabric. I had to break branches off my spruce tree to get that shot!

marg6

This is actually Marg’s daughter’s quilt but she got her mom to piece it for her, what a nice mom!  She wanted a panto design and we decided on Whirlygig…which is funny because the company that designed this quilt is called Whirligig Designs.  It has Dream Puff batting and I used Lava thread on top and Bottom Line in the bobbin.

I have a special blog post for Sunday that you won’t want to miss…here is a hint…it involved my favorite type of fabrics and your participation in the comment section!  :)

Vintage Kansas City Star Quilt

rae1
This is Rae’s Vintage Kansas City Star quilt which was a block of the month project from the Fat Quarter shop in 2012.   Rae’s only request was that there be no feathers in the outer border so I did a Bead Board design which compliments the feather motif in the light sashing areas.  I made a stencil with a simple loop design to use in the corner stone blocks and framed it with a 1/4” line to match the bead board.  Each block is quilted with a different design using feathers, CC, straight lines, etc.  I stippled all the light background fabrics to compliment the texture of the feathers in the sashing.

It’s hard to capture the quilting on the back in a picture but it really shows up nicely in person!

If you look closely you can see a large pile of snow on the ice, my son and I are building a quinzee.  If you don’t know what a quinzee is check out this link.  We still have to hollow out the inside this weekend.

Curve it Up – Dresden Plate Block #9

block9

Here is the next block for the Curve it Up Quilt Along, its the Dresden Plate.  You can find the instructions for this one on Jenny’s blog here.

I now have 9 blocks done and really like how this quilt is coming together.  I am getting short on my hand dyed background fabric so hope I have enough to finish this quilt.  Don’t think I can dye the exact same color shade again!

9blocks

I presented the next set of instructions for our guilds Mystery project last week and here is what we have everyone doing….more HST!    128 to be exactly but this time they are only 1 3/4” square!!  :)

February Mystery

I also received a package in the mail containing these lovely Bali Snaps!   I had won a guessing contest on Linda’s blog, the second one I have won on her blog!  I guess I’m a good guesser!   She send me a gift certificate for an online fabric shop and I had no problem finding some lovely batiks.  Thank you Linda, that was so sweet of you!!

I have been busy working on a beautiful Sampler quilt this week and will be sharing that soon!

Oak Leaf Quilt

This is Valery’s Oak Leaf quilt and it looks great among the evergreen trees!   I know this is a Quiltmaker pattern but I couldn’t find the issue number.   I quilted it using the panto Fascination and used Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Island Sunrise #5

evelyn6

This is Evelyn’s Island Sunrise and she used two set of patterns to make her quilt larger than the wall-hanging size we made at the guilds workshop.  The green and blue batik fabrics make for a wonderful colour combination.   She asked for an edge to edge quilting design and I chose the Curlz panto.   So Fine green thread on top and blue Bottom Line for the backing.

Evelyn1 evelyn7evelyn4

I showed the backing I snow dyed in the last post and I was very pleased with how well it matched the quilt top.   I’m feeling more confident in my fabric dyeing results but know that it is still part experience and part luck!  :)
