Detour– Pattern Number 6 and a GIVEAWAY!

detour3
Its been almost a year since Lori and I have published a pattern for Highway 10 Designs but we are back at it!   Today we are introducing our newest pattern called Detour, which includes instructions for a table runner and four place mats.   This pattern is now available in our Etsy shop in both formats, PDF download or paper.  This pattern only requires 3 fabrics and goes together quickly.  It could be made with modern, batik, traditional, seasonal, or holiday fabrics as it suits all styles.
Detour cover
You may have noticed our new Highway 10 Designs logo, we are very excited to have it grace the cover of all our patterns now.   Our very talented (and patient)  friend Dawn was kind enough to take on this project for us and she did an amazing job bring our vision to life.  We wanted it to be bold, rustic,  true to our style and most of all eye catching.  I think it is all that and more.  Here is how all our patterns covers look now.

I have a lot of pictures of Detour to share since I made quite a few samples, it was so quick to make.  The pattern is written so you construct the table runner and 4 place mats at the same time using chain piecing methods.  This is a real time saver.  Also we are excited to create a project that you can quilt yourself! Even though Lori and I are both longarm quilters we love to see how others quilt our patterns and this project is very easy to quilt on your domestic machines.  I quilted my samples with that in mind using both straight line and some free motion designs.  Lets start with pictures of our cover samples.  We used batik fabrics in a teal/brown print for the focus fabric, brown for the dark fabric and beige for the light fabric.

I also made this pattern in a batik brown/blue combination.

Then I made a few table runners to test out more colour combinations.  This first one is shades of blue in batiks.

The next one is a soft green/brown combination.  This one is my personal favorite as I love soft neutral batiks!

Looks great on my patio table outside too!

Now if you head over to Lori’s blog you will see her Detour samples, here is a peek.  This first one is made with Art Gallery fabrics and has a modern feel.

The second one is made with batiks in black, grey and white.

Now to the fun part… the Giveaway!  Lori and I are each hosting giveaways with different fabrics so you have two chances to win our new pattern plus fabrics to make it!  We are even going to give you a choice of fabrics and all you have to do for my giveaway is leave a comment letting me know what fabric kit you would like to win with the pattern.   The two fabric combinations I am offering are:
Kit #1 - A blue batik combination very similar to the blue runner sample.

So just leave a comment letting me know which kit you would like to win and that’s it.   International entries welcome and anyone should be able to leave a comment under Anonymous if you do not have a blogger/google account.  Just make sure you included your email so I can contact you if you win.   Once  you have entered my giveaway then please go over to Lori’s blog Night Owl Quilting & Dye Works to see the samples she has made with our pattern and enter her giveaway.  She will have different fabrics to offer to go with the pattern.  We will make the draws on Saturday, June 20th.   I’m getting close to 1000 followers (wow really!) so if I hit that milestone that would put me in a really good mood and I might draw two names and giveaway both kits!  Good luck!

Draw is now closed.

Teal HST Quilt and New Pantos

jt6

This is Joanne’s Teal HST quilt and was made from fabrics from her stash.    She made 4 1/2” HST block and did a simple diamond pattern that has a great visual impact.   I quilted it was a new Panto called Bora Bora as the quilt top has a beach/ocean feel and that panto looks like wind/water to me.   I used beige So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

She brought a beautiful teal flannel backing that matched the front colours so well.

Other new pantographs I purchases from Urban Elementz were Gatsby, Greenery, Always Ivy, Northwinds and Venice Too.

Dresden Plate Wedding Quilt

ll8

This is Linda’s Dresden Plate quilt and it is made with reproduction fabrics.  This will be a wedding gift for her granddaughter who loves vintage things so this will be the perfect gift!  Linda’s friend Nadine made the blocks and machine appliqued the Dresden plates.  She gave them to Linda and then she pieced the blocks together and then gave it to me to quilt, so it has been a real team effort!  She asked for traditional quilting which is exactly what this quilt needed.

ll3

Since the border was solid white and you can see the quilting so nicely there I did a feather curl design.  I call these ‘Desley’s Feathers” as she is the one that showed me how to do this design but I have changed them up a bit.   I used open feathers not heirloom feathers so I have given them my own touch!   I did a simple curl in the sashing and lots of CC’s and feather motifs in the Sampler blocks.

ll9

In the Dresden Plate block I did tall loops in the fan blades, a feather pedal motif in the center and meandering loops in the background.  I did SID around the blocks, center circle and fan blades.

I used white So Fine thread on top and white Bottom Line thread on the back so no thread changing making the quilting process go quickly.   Linda brought the batting and I think it is a Bamboo blend as it is very soft and gave me a sneezing fit when I  first opened it up. Sure sign it is Bamboo, that is why I don’t carry it but I don’t mind quilting it.  It doesn’t bother me once I have the quilt top loaded on the machine.

I have been experimenting with Instagram for a few months and think I like it!  So if you use this App you can find me under the username tamarackshack1.   Sometimes I post pictures of what is on my longarm before they are done so you can get a sneak peek at what I’m working on.

Red, Black and White Mahjongg

lf1
This is Lynn’s Mahjongg quilt and she will be donating this for an auction at her high school reunion this June.   Our local high school colours are Red, Black and White so her fabric choices are very appropriate for the celebration and I’m sure everyone there will want to win this beauty!    The backing is white Minkie so it is a very cuddly quilt and the panto is Bayside.

If these pictures look a little hazy they are, the air here is filled with smoke from forest fires.   There are some large fires in Northern Saskatchewan about 260km away and with the wind blowing from the west we are getting all the smoke.

Modern Mahjongg

tb5

This is Terry’s Mahjongg quilt that she made at our guilds Beginner class last year.  She used a selection of modern fabrics in soft colours that make a very pretty quilt.   I thought Deja Vu would be a nice panto for this one as you can really see the quilting in the light background fabrics.  Quilters Dream Blend for the batting and a light beige So Fine thread.
