Woke up to the bay being frozen over as it got down to –20’c last night, but the main lake is still open water. Had a nice surprise along with the ice and that was hoar frost! The crystal above is 2 1/2” in size and the ice was covered in these crystals.
You can see the fog above the open water as the cold air is quickly cooling the warmer water, relatively speaking! You can’t see much of the main lake from our dock as those are islands on the left, right and even in the far background. I like how we are sheltered in our little bay.
It looks like someone had a big pillow fight and there are feathers all over the ice! :)
I also took some video to try to capture the sounds of the ice and was lucky to capture one good crack! Ice is not quiet at all and is constantly making noise. At about 0:13 you will hear the loud sound that makes me jump, that’s the ice not a gun shot!
Thanks for sharing the beauty in your little corner of the world.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful!Amazing photos
ReplyDeleteHow Cool is that??!! I have never heard ice crack like that. Thanks for sharing. I also have never seen hoar frost that big. I have only seen it floating once or twice in the air.
ReplyDeleteThis is fascinating! So beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Those "frost feathers" are so beautiful!! Thanks for sharing them with us!
ReplyDeleteI knew ice would crack as it melts, but I didn't realize it would crack as it freezes too. And the hoar frost is beautiful. Thanks for showing us.
ReplyDeletevery pretty - you have such pretty scenery - I know it will be very cold for such a spell now - 6 months? you will be ready for spring again by April. thanks for sharing I love looking at it but I know because I am used to short winters I would get tired of it after awhile although I did live in the north for the first half of my life in WI, CT and ID
ReplyDeleteFabulous post. Thanks for showing! We had some last week here in Sweden, but not as extreme. Loved seeing about it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your back garden. The scenery is stunning.
ReplyDeleteAwesome stuff Kathy! Thanks for sharing with us - so "cool"...
ReplyDeleteAivan pysäyttävän kaunista, asut ihanalla paikalla, luonto on aivan uskomaton! Jännästi jääruusut syntyneet jään pintaan!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Even my husband stopped and had a look!
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable ice art - and sounds! I've also spent a lot of time at lake shore, but never heard ice make a sound like that!
ReplyDeleteUgh...that is why I have never liked walking across the lake, no matter how much faster to reach our destination. As a child I often had nightmares about cracking ice. But it is so beautiful, especially as it shines in the sun. Thanks so for sharing...we are not cold enough here yet. It has snowed lightly a couple of times...but it is still melting. Soon enough it will stay ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Cathy. I miss the beauty and the sounds of the lake.
ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful! I have never heard of Hoar Frost before. Wow! Amazing! Thank you for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteMagnificent! What a beautiful part of winter in Northern Manitoba. Great photography.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I wonder if a quilt could be made to look like hoar frost. Hmmm, maybe I'll try...
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! But I am glad to be snug and snow-free. Virginians lose their minds everytime we get a sprinkling of snow.
ReplyDeleteWow, I've never seen hoar frost before. It's beautiful in your pictures. I don't know how you are able to live in such a cold climate, but I'm glad you do because of the wonderful sites you share with all of us! I do look forward to them. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoy your photos and your life in Flin Flon as I have a daughter that lives in Snow Lake. The shots of the hoar frost are just amazing. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful. I never knew such a thing could happen. Thank you for sharing.

Breathtakingly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen hoar frost a few times in Indiana and it took my breath away. Such beauty! Loved the pictures.
ReplyDeleteDeve essere stupendo vivere in un posto così!
ReplyDeleteRumore del ghiaccio a parte, il silenzio è...è... assordante....!
Beautiful photos! Nature is truly amazing. We don't always stop and take the time to look at it.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen this type of frost before. Just beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI am in awe of your surroundings. I live and grew up in Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plains!! And can't imagine living in the cold for so many months of the year. This is absolutely beautiful and the sound of that ice was shocking! I didn't realize it was so noisy!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! Thank you for sharing and reminding me of the wonderful lakes. I lived at Lake Tahoe for a time and loved the winter although Lake Tahoe never freezes over. Too deep. But the views were incomparable. My DH however hated the cold and the tire chains. So now we live in Las Vegas! Who knew!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that this happened, and how totally beautiful it is. Thank you for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteeverytime you post the beauty of your back yard i get the itch to move to an acreage. One day, I hope. It is so peaceful and special. Just wonder about the kids. I have never seen hoar frost like that - it's incredible!
ReplyDeleteWow- that is so cool, learned something new today! Love your blog and particularly because of your quilts combined with your scenery, snow and ice photos.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen hoar frost... fascinating! I still get the willies walking on ice and feel better along the shoreline even in the middle of winter.
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm not sure which is more amazing - the detail of the hoar frost, or the image of thousands of them!
ReplyDeleteWow - that is so gorgeous. And it looks so cold ;-) I love your photos!!
