Alternate Routes #11

This is Lucinda's Alternate Routes quilt that she made during our Highway 10 Designs "Sew Along" at Up North Quilt Shop last year.  She chose similar batik fabrics as on our pattern cover and the same layout option that we used as well.  

 Lucinda asked for simple quilting and I chose Fascination for the pantograph design.  Thread is a light blue So Fine thread and batting is Quilters Dream Blend.

Spring-A-Ling Quilt

This is Patty's 2017 Designer Mystery BOM from the Fat Quarter Shop featuring fabric from the Spring-A-Ling Moda collection. I was very happy to hear she is keeping this quilt for herself and wanted it custom quilted.  Since it has a very traditional feel I had fun quilting it with a variety of feathers, curls, CC's, SID, cross hatching, stippling and loops.

I haven't quilted flowing feathers in awhile so really enjoyed that part and they fit in well in the setting triangles in the outer border.  

I used off white So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Now I have to box it up and mail it back to Patty in Germany...that is always the hardest part, saying goodbye to these gorgeous quilts!

Alternate Routes #10

Tracy also did the Highway 10 Designs 'Alternate Routes' Sew Along at Up North Quilt Shop last year and she chose a black print batik and a very light blue grey batik for the background. I love this colour combination, very modern and masculine.  Tracy added a 4" border to hers and it looks very good with the symmetrical layout she picked from the 20 options we offer in the pattern.

I quilted it with the Plush pantograph, used medium grey So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting. 

Found a new observation deck along the Rainy River that works well for photos when I have a helper!

Starry, Starry Nines

This is Patty's 'Starry, Starry Nines' quilt and the pattern is by Pam Buda.  Patty made this quilt on a quilting cruise in the Caribbean when she took a class with Pam. I have never been on a quilting cruise but they sound fun!

I quilted it using the Chinook pantograph and used beige So Fine thread.  The batting is Quilters Dream Blend.

The snow is now gone and its starting to feel like spring!

Alternate Routes #9

Stacey joined in on our Highway 10 Designs 'Alternate Routes Sew Along' at Up North Quilt Shop last year.  I helped her pick out her fabrics as she was overwhelmed with the amazing batik section at Up North.  She made this quilt for her niece and the teal and purple batiks are so vibrant and youthful.  Stacey even went out of her comfort zone and chose to do one of our asymmetrical layout options, love it!

I quilted it with the Wave on Wave pantograph and it shows up so nicely on the teal Minky backing!  Batting is Quilters Dream Blend and the thread is a teal So Fine.

 I have a few more Alternate Routes waiting in my que from the Sew Along so can't wait to share them with you!

Calendula Patterdrip's Cottage

Sally created this wonderful witch themed quilt that is a combination of hand embroidery, colouring and pieced blocks.  The pattern is called Calendula Patterdrip's Cottage by Crab-Apple Hill Designs.  There is so much detail in the embroidery designs that I keep seeing new things each time I look at it!  

Sally asked for simple custom quilting with minimal quilting on the embroidery so I just SID the main elements in the designs.  I added a meander in the background and treated the blocks on the outer edge like a border and quilted those blocks individually. But the blocks in the center of the quilt I treated as background and meandered over to define that area. I wanted the focus to be the embroidery work not the pieced blocks.

I used 100wt Microquilter off white thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

I think that pointy toed boot is my favorite image! So much detail in everywhere you look on this quilt!

Black and White HST Quilt

Kim made this great black and white HST quilt for her grandson!  I watched her work on this quilt top at our Tuesday sewing group, no pattern, just an idea from a sketch!  She used black and white fabrics from her stash and Primitive Gatherings Triangle Papers to make the 2 1/2" HST blocks. I think the main benefit of using this method is you get accurate HST blocks with not trimming!

Kim asked for free hand wavy lines and I think that was a perfect choice for this quilt.  I used black So Fine thread, Quilters Dream Blend batting and the backing she brought was black Fireside.

Creamsicle Quilt

Shelly made this delicious quilt called Creamsicle, makes me think of hot summer day by the lake!  The pattern is in the book Simple Color - Orange by Vanessa Christenson.  Shelly is on a mission to use up her stash one colour at a time and this is the perfect pattern for orange.

 She asked for simple custom quilting and really wanted it quilted like it was in the book. I tried to convince her to let me quilt few feathers on there but nope, she is a modern gal so I did my best to make sure she was going to love it!  I made a few changes to the quilting in the books sample to add my own touch to it!

Here is a picture of the books version below. I changed out the cross hatching to echo quilting and added a double line in the petal.  

There are a lot of stops and starts to this style of quilting but so worth it!  I used off white So Fine thread and the QP Curve 20" template for the curved quilting.

I really want to make an orange quilt now, how about you?
