Aegean Sea Quilt

  sea5
Every once in awhile I quilt a client quilt that I really don’t want to give back, this is one of them!  I love the batik fabrics and the pieced pattern which is called Aegean Sea and it can be found in the book Stellar Quilts by Judy Martin.  When I put a lot of thought and work into the quilting designs I feel a bit of ownership to it even thought I know it has to be mailed back to it owner.    And the owner of this quilt is the daughter of my client Gail who sent me the last two quilts I posted.  Looks like she learned the art of quilting very well from her mom!

I was asked to quilt it just like in the book but I like to be a bit more creative and put my own interpretation into the quilting so was given the go ahead to change it up.   In the open spaces I created a feather wreath around a pumpkin seed design in two circles.  Here is a picture of how it was quilted in the book, you can see I used the pumpkin seed design and the extended feathers from the wreath but changed up the shape of the wreath and filled in more to create more texture and balance.

I repeated the pumpkin seed design in the star blocks, the book only had that design in the center square of the star but I continued and carried it into the background squares to really tie it into the feathered wreath design.

I SID around all the Greek key pieced designs and added loops in the inner and outer border.

Its a large quilt, 99”x99” and covered most of what is left of my ice patch!

I just don’t want to send this one home but I’ll get it in the mail this week Gail, I promise!  :)

  4. Your quilting is breathtaking! How long have you been longarming?

  5. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I can see why you want to keep it. Stunning piecing; but your quilting has made the finished quilt! I only wish I could do that. I have hand quilted for
over 25 years, but machine quilting is something else...lol. I am trying though with my Baby Lock Tempo...just small items...you should be so very proud!! And so should she!!

  8. This is a beauty. I love the Greek Keys. The colour placement in the keys gives me the sensation of a rippling Aegean Sea. Kudos to both the quilter and the longarmer.

  9. Just beautiful!!! The blues of the batiks are just perfect on this quilt and your quilting came out great, I don't blame you for wanting to hold on to it!

  10. Your stitching is such a better balance of feathering. The original seems a bit "unbalanced" to me....not enough of the larger plumes (when I first looked at the original the word 'feeble' came to me). The tiny plumes (original) seem undersized and don't have the beautiful 'flow' of the motif you stitched. Beautiful work and that is a keeper! (Ooops! No! get it in the mail to Gail, I mean!!! LOL!) Hugs, Doreen

  18. A glorious quilt and I can see why you changed up the quilting a tad. It perfectly suits the design of the blocks. I takes that special talent and know how, to fit the quilting to the pieced top, both go together to make this exceptional quilt!

  26. Congratulations to both the piecer and the quilter for a beautiful quilt. Kathy your guidance to Gail for the change to the central quilting motif was inspired as the larger "feathers" provide the illusion of floating seaweed, giving the finished quilt a flowing movement.
