Snow Days Quilt

Marlene sent this lovely Snow Days quilt for me to quilt for her, the pattern is by Crabapple Hill Studio.  Marlene has made many embroidery quilts and I have has the pleasure of seeing a few of them hanging in her home when I dropped of a finished quilt for her quite a few years ago.  She loves the combination of embroidery with quilting.  She had finished the embroidery part of this quilt a while ago but was finally able to complete the quilt top while staying safe at home due to Covid restrictions this past year.

Love the soft shades of brown used in the pieced blocks and then as you look closer you see all the lovely winter scenes embroidered into the background fabric.

We decided on Bora Bora for the pantograph as it looks like blowing snow!  I used off white So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting.

Taking photos of an embroidery quilt breaks all the normal rules of quilt photography!  You don't want to highlight the quilting with side light from a window, you want the light source to face directly towards the quilt to avoid the quilting shadows from becoming predominant.  So I hung the quilt on my photography stand indoors and faced the quilt directly opposite to one of my living room windows. It was overcast out so perfect lighting for this as no direct sunlight was shining through.

This next photo was to highlight the quilting on the pieced blocks so I laid it on the floor to get the side light from the window.

I like her Canadian touch by making the schoolhouse flag the Canadian flag!

  1. Totally gorgeous, the way the blocks are interwoven with the stitchery, the detail is amazing, a quilt to cherish always.
